Homes of Suspended Former NYPD Chief Searched Amid Federal Investigation

QUEENS: The FBI executed search warrants Thursday at two properties tied to former NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, who has been formally suspended amid allegations of misconduct.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the suspension, stating that the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau is collaborating with law enforcement. The searches, including at Maddrey’s Cambria Heights home and another Rosedale property, coincide with federal inquiries into claims of sexual misconduct and abuse of power.

Maddrey resigned in mid-December following allegations that he traded sexual favors for overtime opportunities. Lt. Quathisha Epps filed a complaint, accusing Maddrey of coercing her into unwanted sexual encounters, including in the office, and retaliating against her when she refused. Epps claimed Maddrey manipulated overtime reports, leading to investigations against her.

Epps reportedly earned over $400,000 last year, largely from overtime, and Maddrey’s attorney alleged she is under investigation for fraudulently claiming hours. The attorney maintained the relationship was consensual, citing evidence such as calls, videos, and messages.

Federal authorities have not disclosed why the allegations escalated to a federal probe, though experts speculate potential fraud or misuse of resources. Maddrey has denied the accusations, claiming Epps fabricated the allegations to deflect from her own misconduct.

NYPD and other agencies continue to investigate. John Chell has been appointed as Maddrey’s replacement.
